Final Reflection – DS106!

Well the semester has come to an end, and I surely will miss this class, DS106. When I first read the class description, I thought to myself that this is the perfect class for me, for someone who love’s creating media – and it fulfilled a general education as well. It was too good to be true. However, from my freshman year till now, I could never get into the class as it always got to full capacity and closed during registration. Finally, this semester, I successfully registered for the class.

At first, I had no idea what digital storytelling really meant, however, I have been able to understand the meaning and the reason for digital storytelling throughout taking this class. I still didn’t know exactly what to expect from the class, however, it turned out to be more than I expected – which was a good thing. The fact that I had prior skills on topics such as design and video and I’d be able to exercise those skills and learn new techniques was more than enough for me to decide to stick with the class. Rather than scaring me off when giving an overview of the class (which I believe professor Groom and Levine were trying to accomplish), I just started loving the class more and more, and dove right into the assignments even before some were assigned (particularly design) and started customizing my blog. I’ll admit, some weeks, especially video week, was really time consuming and challenging, however, it was well worth it since I enjoyed doing the assignments (of course much more than the monotonous assignments I had from other classes).

What I loved about this class was that you were able to share your own work as well as see other peoples work in a well organized blog. I’m also really glad that I now know how to setup a Word Press blog and what tools to use to manipulate them, which will really come in handy in the future. I definitely enjoyed doing both the design and video assignments – two things I’ve already enjoyed doing prior to this class. This class has also convinced me to invest in a SLR camera, as some of the visual/photography assignments were really inspiring and something I’d definitely want to get into. Some of my best works I believe included some from design such as the Light Saber Warning Label and the Transformers – If Movies Posters Told the Truth Poster. Also, one from audio that I believe turned out well was the On My Way to Work Sound Effect Story. Finally, my video projects such as the Toy Story 3 Horror Recut Trailer , The Walking Dead Opening Credit Remake, and the Star Wars Trilogy Mashup were some of my favorites. My final project turned out pretty well too, and I really enjoyed creating it and learned a lot from it. I really regret not being able to get into this class earlier in my years so I’d have much more time I could devote to the assignments.

The meaning and idea of a cyber infrastructure has mostly remained the same for me even throughout the semester. My definition being a virtual space in which you create your own identity and share your own stories, thoughts, creations and opinions – something DS106 allowed us to do. Throughout the semester, I was able to see my own cyber infrastructure as well as the global DS106 community infrastructure grow. Again, as I stated in my previous blog post on cyber infrastructures, I’m glad to be given the opportunity by taking this class allowing me to have my own personal learning environment.

Overall, I learned more than I thought I would by taking this class, and some of the topics have really impressed me such as learning all about the idea Web 2.0 and digital facelifts, which I was previously completely unaware of. I would suggest this class (and already have) to anyone who’s looking to gain some skills that they can’t get else-where from any class. The DS106 community is rapidly growing and having the opportunity to be part of it is something you really need to take advantage of. If there was only a second part to this class that I could take during the summer, I would…DS107 anyone??

Future iView!

In the year 2020, where the computer and phone is all hardwired in your eye to your brain.. below is a video showing off some of the stuff you’ll be able to do with this. It’s still in the beta testing phase Smilie: :P. Anyways, Forget google glasses, this is far superior! Well actually, google’s project glass was part of my inspiration to make this.

This project idea came to my mind when I saw the “vision of the future” assignmenton DS106′s video assignments page:

http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/vision-of-the-future/

I thought about doing something that would show various applications including web 2.0 applications we’ve used during the class and have it all hardwired in the eye. Therefore you control everything hands-free and are able to access it anytime, anywhere. The whole idea is something I’ve actually been obsessed with and looking forward to becoming a reality in the near future – and we’re getting there with technology such as google glass. I believe with such technology, the world will be much more involved in the online world and individuals will be more easily able to create and update their own cyber infrastructure. Everyone will always be connected – kinda scary when you think about it, but cool.

I sticked with the video editor I’m most familiar with, Sony Vegas 7.0 to create this project. I have to say, for a project like this, it wasn’t the best video editor as it slowed down on me alot and crashed a few times. For the icon designs on the screen, I used photoshop and the logos I got from google images. The footage was filmed on my HD sony handycam, however during the video conversion process, the video quality went significantly down. For the actual screens such as iTunes, Chrome, and Netflix, I used a desktop recorder to get the footage and then I was simply able to overlay that footage over my video and apply some effects to it to make it seem more hologram-ish and blended in. Therefore, my video project consisted of a bunch of layers on top of the footage.

This was surely a really frustrating and time consuming final project, however, I really enjoyed the process – and I’m finally done! I actually had more in mind that I wanted to do, however because of the time constraint and a bunch of other work I had, I couldn’t. I wasn’t able to put enough detail efforts. I’m not so pleased with the overall quality of the video and lack of detail, however I know with more planning and time (and perhaps a more reliable video editor) I could have done much better. Some things I would change or add is make a better looking interface for the icons, something more interactive. I’d also include many more applications and some that interact with your environment (such as maps/gps, maybe a profile scanner where you can scan a person and get their facebook/twitter profile links – creepy, i know). I’d also have less footage of me walking or looking around and more cuts of applications showing, etc. Finally, I’d try to do a better job in holding the camera still! I might try a similar project on my free time someday.

Overall, I really enjoyed the project and glad that DS106 provided me with the opportunity to do something like this, cause otherwise I’d probably be too lazy to, even if I had the desire. It was a great experience from which I learned alot and will be able to apply if I decide to do a similar project in the future.

Check Check Check

So with the semester coming to an end, I’ve made sure I’m prepared. I’ve organized by blog using categories and made sure I’ve completed everything according to the syllabus. I’ve created my UMW blog to archive my DS106 blog, however, I still plan to continue hosting my original blog on Go Daddy. As for my final project, it’s basically done now, so I’ll be posting that up soon. Participation wise, I’ve constantly commented on other students work throughout the semester (both on blogs and flickr), tweeted about DS106 (in fact, the only tweets i’ve made so far are all hash tagged DS106), created assignments and suggested daily creates. I made sure I have everything on the checklist done early so I can have time for other projects and exams coming up. I believe I’m on track then Smilie: :)

Final Project Update

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh, I got so many projects and assignments to do this last week of classes, I believe I’ve overwhelmed myself by choosing to do this type of final project – “Future Eye View.” However, I’m still sticking with it, I’ve already recorded some eye-view footage on my camera and been working on some visuals that will be displayed on the video. I’m really hoping this turns out well, so far I haven’t ran into any problems except time. Most of what’s left to do is combining all the stuff I’ve already completed from the last two weeks for the final project. We’ll see how the final product turns out.

Emo Target (Remix)

This remix assignment was a mix between the original “Re-brand a logo” and “Go emo.” I had a tough time using someone else’s original assignment to remix into an emo logo, so I just ended up using the target logo, putting a bit of my own remix to it and making it emo. Some of the stuff I did includes turning the saturation down and using a different text for the “target” below the logo and turning it black. I also added an emo hair vector over the logo, kinda like the target is an eye and part of its hair is covering it, making it emo.

This remix assignment can be a bit tough when having to use someone else’s re-branded logo, however, there are many logo’s out there better than others that can be converted to an emo logo, and that’s why I used target.

If Movie Posters Told A Lie! (Remix)

This remix assignment was a mix of the original assignment “if movie posters told the truth” along with “the opposer.” So I thought of doing the opposite then of telling the truth, and instead displayed a lie on a movie poster. The one I chose to remix was from a previous one done by a student, Jack:

http://blog.flickhuck4lyfe.info/?p=139

I basically took the image and replaced where he wrote his quote with “my two cents.” And instead of giving the truth about Clint Eastwood in the movie (“Talks in a gravelly voice and shits on subtlety”Smilie: ;), I wrote the opposite of his persona in the movie – ” Story of a young loving man.” For those of you who have seen the movie, you know that is the compete opposite of his character. I believe this a was a really do-able remix assignment if you take it with the approach of “If movie posters told a lie.”

All I Have To Do Is Dream – Lyric Video

For my lyric video snippet, I decided to go back to the classics and chose to do a snippet from “All I Have To Do Is Dream” by The Everly Brothers. What I basically did was get an HD Cloud looping video from youtube to have a dreamy like theme to suit with the song. Afterwards, I layed the audio track down and applied the text for the lyrics. I added some fade in and fade out effects as well as added a slow zoom in effect to the text – trying to keep it as slow, light, and dreamy as possible.

Good Guys Gone Bad in 5 Seconds

For this assignmenet, I picked five movies/tv-shows and one archetype that I took from each of them which was “Good Guys Gone Bad.” Basically 5 characters that started out to be the “Good Guys” but throuhgut the movie or tv show, became “Bad.” The first was Anakin from Star Wars, which you all know started out as Jedi and ended up a Sith as Dark Vader. The second one was Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight, who became Two-Face at the end. The third one was Shane from The Walking Dead, who started out as a good cop, however ended up as the antagonist. The fourth one was Obadiah Stane from Iron Man, who was along side Iron Man, however ended up turning on him. Finally, the fifth one was Walt from Breaking Bad, the name of the show tells you – he started out as an innocent chemistry teacher, however got into cooking meth and got his hands really dirty in the whole drug business. There’s nothing much to say about how the video was editing since it was a really short video which invlovled just taking short clips of the characters and putting it together. BTW, the video itself is not 5 seconds, however the footage is around that length.
